Services
We treat Dogs, Cats, Ferrets, Rabbits, Hamsters, Gerbils, Rats, Mice, and Guinea Pigs. Wellness & Preventative ProgramsOur practice is not just about an annual visit to give vaccinations. We believe strongly in wellness programs, individually tailored to each individual pet. Our client care coordinators and nursing staff obtain a complete and detailed history of your pet’s health and any problems. Our doctors will perform a comprehensive physical exam on your pet including a dental, ophthalmic, ear, heart, pulmonary (lungs), abdominal, musculoskeletal, neurologic, pain and skin exam. We use these skills along with diagnostic testing, vaccine titers, and any other necessary tests to determine your pet’s need for a vaccine, and to monitor your pet's health in an attempt to catch problems early. The comprehensive examinations are given to every pet that we see at our hospital. Our doctor will explain the findings and recommend any necessary diagnostic tests to achieve a diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic plan for your pet.Blood testingWe offer complete laboratory services on site as well an offsite national laboratory. We perform Heartworm tests, Feline Leukemia (FeLV)/ Feline AIDS (FIV) testing, thyroid testing, kidney and liver enzyme tests, urine tests, and complete blood cell counts routinely on annual exams as well as for animals that are ill. Internal MedicineWe can perform most diagnostic testing in our hospital to aid us in achieving a diagnosis on your pet’s condition. This includes testing for lethargy (depressed, not eating or drinking), diabetes (weight loss, increased drinking/increased urination), fevers, anemia (pale gums), infection (pus or abscesses), urinary tract infection (straining to urinate or urinating in the house), bladder stones, liver (vomiting, jaundice), kidney(increased drinking/increased urination), heart and lung disease (heart murmers, heartworms, cardiomyopathy, blood pressure testing, asthma, coughing/gagging), endocrine diseases (thyroid problems, Cushing’s or Addison’s disease), gastrointestinal (vomiting, diarrhea/soft stool, not eating), cancer workup (tumors, masses).Soft Tissue & Orthopedic SurgeryFrom simple spays and neuters to complicated fracture repairs, Dr. Woodside is a confident and competent surgeon capable of many different surgical procedures. For more complicated cases requiring referral, our staff will help you make the right choice to choose a specialist for your pet’s care. All of our surgical patients undergo a complete pre-operative physical exam and bloodwork with a urinalysis, as well as x-rays, ECG’s or ultrasounds when appropriate. While under anesthesia, your pet will be under intense supervision, using a human-grade cardiac monitor to measure blood pressure, electrocardiogram (EKG) and blood-oxygen saturation (Pulse oxymetery). Our surgical nurses have combined experience of over 20 years assisting in surgery and anesthesia. Some of the procedures that we perform are Ovariohysterectomy (spay), Castration (neuter), declaws, (cats and dewclaw removal on newborn puppies), tumor removal (skin tumors/masses, eyelid tumors), stomach and intestinal blockage, bladder surgery, kidney surgery, wound and abscess repair, urinary blockage, fracture repair (broken limbs, toes), femoral head ostectomy (hip dysplasia surgery), cruciate rupture and patellar luxations (knee surgery), bone biopsy, dental and reconstructive (plastic) surgery.VaccinationsOur doctors follow the most current guidelines for pet vaccinations with the best interest of the pet in mind. We take every case into consideration individually and tailor a vaccination protocol to your pet’s needs. We stagger your pet’s vaccinations year by year to ensure effectiveness and decrease vaccine-associated problems. Puppies and kittens generally require 4 rounds of booster vaccinations 3 weeks apart, beginning at 7 to 9 weeks, and are given a rabies vaccination at 4 months old. In some cases, we may recommend a vaccine titer level to determine whether your pet is protected adequately. DentistryThat bad breath you smell every time your pet gives you a big kiss is more than just an irritant to you, it's bacteria in their mouth that gets enters their system and blood stream every day. Dental disease has been proven in studies to affect overall health. Our staff is trained to recognize all of the stages of dental disease in all of the animals that we see. We perform ultrasonic cleanings, polishing, fluoride treatment, periodontal care (gingival scaling), extractions, and dental x-rays. We recommend Oxyfresh treatment for bad breath and plaque control for all cats and dogs, and will show you how to properly brush your pet’s teeth. Sometimes we will recommend a different diet or sealant for your pet’s teeth to help control tarter buildup as well. Parasite screening and controlParasites continue to be a cause of disease in animals and humans. Many parasites that animals get infect people as well. We are committed to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations of at least twice yearly de-worming protocols. We offer semi-annual exams and provide an intestinal parasite fecal exam free of charge to help our furry friends stay as healthy as possible. We offer a new flea control product named Comfortis, which is a once monthly flea preventative that is an FDA approved drug, so it has gone through rigorous safety testing. It works far better than any of the topical treatments, and you can bathe your dog without washing it off. RadiologyRadiographs (or X-rays) are a vital tool in veterinary medicine, used to diagnose orthopedic (bone) as well as soft tissue and internal injuries. Our practice has invested in digital x-ray equipment that uses the latest technology to obtain the best possible results in the shortest amount of time. We are able to transmit the information via the internet to specialists for interpretation if necessary, and provide a copy of the study to our clients on a disc. The x-ray studies are shown to every client and explained thoroughly in language everyone can understand. Laboratory DiagnosticsLaboratory diagnostics are one of the most important tools veterinarians use to determine the health status of your pet, in part because they don’t talk! Laboratory results can tell a Doctor more than their eyes can alone, and when used in conjunction with a complete physical exam, helps put the pieces of the puzzle together. We offer blood work panels and a complete urinalysis in our wellness programs, not just to sick animals. We are capable of in-house testing or we may choose to send the blood out to a national laboratory if the pet is stable. We will call you with results and explain any abnormalities to you, and make any recommendations for further treatments if necessary.Pain ManagementAbove all, we don’t want our best friends to be in pain. Every patient is evaluated for pain on physical exam. We employ multi-modal pain management for all surgical procedures both before and after surgery to ensure that the pets are as comfortable as possible. In some cases, we will refer the patient for acupuncture as another way to help the pet feel better and give their owner peace of mind. There are many new pain management possibilities now than ever before, and we are committed to doing everything we can to alleviate pain in our patients. Emergency & Critical CareWe offer emergency care and triage during office hours, as well as hospitalization for the critical patient that cannot be sent home. Our staff members are highly trained to recognize animal emergencies, and will ensure that your pet is seen by a Doctor in a timely manner. Emergencies are always given priority in our scheduling, whether you are a new or existing client. We have an intensive care unit to monitor your pet’s condition during hospital hours and offer overnight care at an emergency facility 2 blocks away from our practice for pets that require constant supervision. Our Doctors will help make the decision that is best for your pet. DermatologySkin problems are the second most common reason for a trip to the vet. Florida is full of fleas, ticks, mites, pollen, and grasses. Bacterial and yeast infections, food allergies and endocrine diseases (thyroid or Cushing’s disease) are also reasons for skin problems in your pet. Often times there are simple solutions to managing your pet’s skin problems, and sometimes further diagnostic tests are needed (skin scrapings, cytology/microscopic exam, culture and sensitivities, biopsy/histopathology, blood testing). We offer a full range of therapies for most types of skin problems, and can help guide you and your pet through the treatment plan.MicrochipsThousands of pets are euthanized in shelters every year because they have been separated from their owners who cannot be located. A microchip is one of the best gifts you can give your pet - permanent identification that can be traced to you. We use Homeagain chips exclusively and include individual registration in the price of the chip, to ensure that your pet is re-united with you should it be found and scanned. It takes 10 seconds to implant and is relatively painless. Client EducationIt is important to us to know that our clients are aware of what we are doing for their pet and WHY. We feel it is necessary to teach owners about their pet's needs and what they can do to best provide for those needs, whether it be a brand new puppy or a geriatric cat that has lived a long life. We are always willing to answer questions for your pet's care. Our client care coordinators, nurses and Doctors spend many hours in Continuing Education classes throughout the year studying the most up to date information on customer service, advanced nursing care, and medicine and surgery to give you the best opinion on your pet that we can. |
